[Kpop song review] Starry Night – Mamamoo

Mamamoo has come back with their new album – Yellow Flower, and they’re hitting music stage with their new song “Starry Night”. I have meant to write a review on this song for a while now but it kept being postponed because of my schedule, and up until today my impressions of the song are actually different from what I thought of it at the first listening.

The song starts off with a loop guitar instrumental that becomes the main hook for the song, repeats many times after. When I first heard it I immediately found this so similar, and after a while I realized that’s because Chanyeol and Punch also used the same method in their hit song “Stay with me”. The song goes on with more of a chill feeling rather than having some kind of big hit. Even when they go into the bridge, there’s only a slight change in tempo and Solar’s vocal is impressive but does not stand out. The whole chorus brings a sensual vibe, adding more to the chilling mood of the song. It does make me feel like I’m inside a wild forest gazing at the stars on the night sky.

The music video is really beautiful, I particularly love the forest scene, I think it is most well-suited background for the mood of this song. But every other shot is superb, capturing the beauty of the sceneries as well as the girls themselves. And if anything, their make-up is so on point! All four girls look so beautiful, especially Hwasa looks like she’s the queen of this land. And Moonbyul just has this innocent look on her face until she starts rapping and you realize she’s a badass.

There’s not much to say about the lyrics though. In fact, I would rather not reading the lyrics while listening, because it’s a bit distracting and it does not hold the meaning I expect it would.

Check out the music video here. Turn on CC for English translations of the lyrics.
